Upcoming Photography Classes & Workshops 2020
Painting with Light Class
When Pablo Picasso posed for the first “painting with light” photo session in 1928, his famous ‘torch sketch in the air’ gave birth to the process some call the antithesis of traditional photography.
“The photographic technique called ‘painting with light’ creates dynamic digital images that result from moving the light source during extended moments of exposure”, explains Sedona based photographer, Robert Clarke Bretell. “In effect, this process is a layering of images against a digital canvas”. In the studio, Bretell uses a hand-held light and a digital camera to “paint” multiple image layers that are combined into a single composition with the help of his Macintosh computer and pertinent software. Many of his “painted” images look more like Old Masters paintings than they do photographs. “I have always had a love and appreciation for seventeenth century still life paintings, the wonderful use of light and shadow to create drama. I guess what I am doing is more of a modern day adaptation of that style using this unique photographic process instead of oil paint and brush”. In this class, students will have an opportunity to learn how to "paint with light" using a combination of light sources such as LED and traditional studio lights. Robert will demonstrate how he captures the images tethered to his laptop device and blends multiple exposures using layers and masks in Photoshop Elements to create a unique and dramatic images. This class is open to all levels of artists. Students should have a basic understanding of photography and have a basic understanding of computer imaging.

Focus on Orchids Photo Workshop Orchids are among natures loveliest creations but are often very challenging to photograph. Robert Clarke Bretell has been shooting orchids for 20 years and will demystify the frustrations many camera enthusiasts have capturing these exotic flowers on digital. During this workshop Robert will demonstrate how he works with natural light using both light modifiers and flash to enhance the beauty of his images. Students will have an opportunity to try these tools and techniques for themselves. This class is recommended for all garden and flower enthusiasts. |
